Tutorial Flight (Voice and Button Control)

The follow tutorial is designed to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

SETUP:

  1. Ensure FS/P3D is running with Admin Rights to help avoid write permission issues.
  2. Run the FS2Crew Majestic Dash 8 Config Manager.  Select ENABLE FS2CREW.  This will add the FS2Crew entries to the Majestic Dash 8's panel.cfg file (assuming there are no write permission issues!)
  3. If you want to use Voice Control, ensure your speech recognizer is set to English - US.   A lot of UK and AU users forget this step!
  4. Load FSX/P3D.
  5. If using FSX, you should see the Trike (ultralight) in the Free Flight screen.  DO NOT USE SAVED SITUATION FILES.  They often do cause problems with complex 3rd party aircraft.
  6. Voice and Button Control: Assign a joystick or button key to Autofeather Arm/Off.  You will use this button to open and close the FS2Crew Main Panel.  We recommend using the "N" key for this assignment.
  7. Voice Control: Assign a joystick or button key to Propeller Sync On/Off.  You will use the button for Soft Mute.
  8. Button Control: Assign a joystick or button to Alternate Static Source On/Off for the Main Button, and Propeller Sync On/Off for the Secondary Button.  You will use these button to trigger the Checklists and Commands.
  9. If you find these buttons don't work in the simulation, assign them to different buttons as they may be conflicting with other 3rd party addons.
  10. Load the Majestic Dash 8 now.
  11. Note for FS2Crew that you are the Captain and Pilot Flying.  Your virtual co-pilot is the First Officer and Pilot Monitoring.

TAKING A FIRST LOOK:

  1. You should now be sitting in the cockpit of the Majestic Dash 8.
  2. The engine should not be running.  The cockpit should be in a 'warm state' assuming you're not using any saved situation files.
  3. Press the key you assigned to open/close the FS2Crew Main panel.
  4. The FS2Crew Main Panel should open.
  5. If it doesn't, try using a different key assignment and check your panel.cfg file (open it with Notepad) to ensure that FS2Crew was successfully added to your Majestic Dash 8's panel.cfg file.
  6. Take a look at the FS2Crew Main Panel.
  7. Note that the PANEL LOCK (LK) button is on by default.  This forces the FS2Crew Main Panel to remain open otherwise it will close every time you switch camera views due to the way FS works.
  8. If you want to change Crew accents or make any other changes changes, press the CFG button and use the Up/Down arrow keys to make your selection.
  9. By default, FS2Crew loads into BUTTON CONTROL MODE (VOICE BUTTON OFF).
  10. If you want to use VOICE CONTROL, press the VOICE BUTTON.  When Voice is off, FS2Crew functions as BUTTON CONTROL.  Note: The position of the VOICE BUTTON is saved when you exit FS.
  11. If you press the VOICE BUTTON and the voice button does not stay on, it means there is a problem with your speech recognition setup.  In 99 percent of cases, it's because you forgot to set your speech recognizer to ENGLISH - US.
  12. Now, let's do an audio check.
  13. First, turn up the volume.  Twist the SERV/INT volume knob on the Captain's audio control panel and make sure it's unmuted (the INT slider in the VHF display box should be GREEN, not white).
  14. Next, press the A.TEST button on the right side of the Main Panel.
  15. You should hear: "LEFT SPEAKER TEST... RIGHT SPEAKER TEST... AUDIO TEST COMPLETE".  If you don't hear anything, check the Troubleshooting section in the manual.  Otherwise, continue on.
  16. Press the BRIEF (BR) button now on the FS2Crew Main Panel.
  17. The Briefing Panel should open up.
  18. In the Briefing Panel, select whether you are at a gate or stand.  But do not run or play the brief yet!

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUTTON CONTROL USERS:

  1. This tutorial was written with VOICE CONTROL users in mind, but BUTTON CONTROL users can still use this tutorial.
  2. Button control is generally very easy to use, as there is nothing to memorize.
  3. Button control follows a strict linear path.
  4. The Checklist Item/Command connected with the MAIN BUTTON is displayed on the left side of the FS2CREW MAIN PANEL.
  5. The Command or Response connected with the SECONDARY BUTTON is displayed on the right side of the FS2CREW MAIN PANEL.
  6. For example, to run the 24 HOUR SYSTEM CHECK Checklist, you would press the Main Button to call for the Checklist.  You would then press the MAIN BUTTON again to respond to first checklist item and so on.
  7. What you will be speaking when you press the MAIN BUTTON is displayed on the MAIN PANEL, so there's never any doubt where you are in the simulation.
  8. The same thing applies for the SECONDARY BUTTON.  What you see on the right side of the FS2CREW MAIN PANEL will be triggered when you press the SECONDARY BUTTON.
  9. During a flight, you will use mostly use the MAIN BUTTON.  The SECONDARY BUTTON is not used often.
  10. To make a flight using the tutorial, simply follow the tutorial.  Where the tutorial says SPEAK or CALL, you would use the MAIN or SECONDARY BUTTON.
  11. Note: Some of the checklist responses in BUTTON CONTROL were made generic since BUTTON CONTROL does  not offer the flexibility of VOICE CONTROL.

RUNNING THE PRE-FLIGHT EVENTS (OPTIONAL):

  1. First, an important note:  Running the Pre-flight events is OPTIONAL.  If you don't want to run it (to save time), simply do not  press the PF EVENTS button.  You can start anywhere you like in FS2Crew by simply using the Up/Down arrow keys on the Main Panel to skip to the desired mode.
  2. Go ahead and press the PF EVENTS button now.  Note that it's on the Main Panel now.  (In older FS2Crew versions, this button was on a separate Config Panel.)
  3. The FO will head outside to do his walkaround.
  4. Now do the FLIGHT DECK POWER UP checklist and perform the actions associated with the checklist.  Note that this checklist is done silently by yourself.

TAKEOFF and INITIAL CLIMB TO 10,000 FEET

  1. Set takeoff power and speak: "CHECK POWER".
  2. Keep your hand on the power levers until V1.
  3. At VR, rotate 6 to 8 degrees nose up.
  4. When the PM calls POSITIVE RATE, speak: "GEAR UP".
  5. At 400 feet AGL, speak "SELECT HEADING SELECT" or "SELECT NAV".
  6. Maintain V2 + 10, not to exceed 15 degrees, until reaching the flap retraction altitude.
  7. When reaching the acceleration altitude, the FO will announce "ACCELERATION".  This call is trigged by passing the MDA bugged altitude.  That's why you need to bug the MDA to the acceleration altitude prior to takeoff.  The acceleration altitude is usually 1000 feet AGL.
  8. After passing the acceleration altitude, speak in as a single phrase: "FLAPS 0, I A S ONE EIGHTY FIVE, CLIMB CHECKLIST TO THE LINE".
  9. If you're having trouble getting the speech recognition engine to recognize the above line, be sure to say the command as a single phrase.  Do not pause between each command!

CLIMB FLOW (PILOT MONITORING) - TRIGGER: PF CALLS FOR FLAPS 0, IAS 185 AND THE CLIMB CHECKLIST TO THE LINE

Note: Speed 185 is recommended until passing 2500 feet AGL.  Above that you may ask the PM to set a higher speed with the voice command "SET I A S XXX"

Note: If you do not want to use speed 185 initially when calling for the Climb Checklist, you may use the following commands:

"FLAPS 0, I A S ONE SIXTY, CLIMB CHECKLIST TO THE LINE"
"FLAPS 0, I A S TWO HUNDRED, CLIMB CHECKLIST TO THE LINE".
"FLAPS 0, I A S TWO FORTY, CLIMB CHECKLIST TO THE LINE".

Note: Above 1000 AGL, you may ask the FO to couple the autopilot.  Speak "AUTOPILOT ON".
Note: The PM reads the Climb Checklist silently.

Note: If using BUTTON CONTROL, you can pre-select the IAS speed to be commanded on the BRIEFING PAGE in the FLAPS field using the the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.

CLIMBING THROUGH 10,000 FEET

  1. Passing through 10,000 feet or the cruise altitude, whichever is lower, speak: "PROPS 8 FIFTY BELOW THE LINE" or, if desired, "PROPS 9 HUNDRED BELOW THE LINE", or if you do not wish the FO to move the condition levers, simply "BELOW THE LINE".
  2. If using BUTTON CONTROL, you can pre-select the prop speed to be commanded on the BRIEFING PAGE in the DP TYPE field using the the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.
  3. The PM will then set the props to 850 or 900 RPM and complete the Climb Checklist as a silent read-and-do.
  4. Note that if you are running external  hardware that also controls the Condition Levers, it may override FS2Crew's attempt to set the Props.
  5. When complete, the PM will announce "CLIMB CHECKLIST COMPLETE".

CLIMB ACTIONS BELOW THE LINE (PILOT MONITORING) - TRIGGER: PF CALLS BELOW THE LINE

Note: When passing the TRANSITION ALTITUDE, speak: "2 9 9 2 SET CROSS CHECK" or "1 0 1 3 SET CROSS CHECK" if you are outside the United States or Canada.

CRUISE AND APPROACH PLANNING

  1. On reaching the cruise altitude, level the aircraft and accelerate.
  2. At VMO - 10 knots or max cruise speed, speak "SET CRUISE POWER".  The PM will push the MCR button on the Engine Control Panel and verify MCR is displayed on the ED.
  3. As soon as possible, record the weather and approach information on the Takeoff and Landing Data (TOLD) card.  Note:  TOLD cards are not simulated in FS2Crew.
  4. The barometric setting at the arrival airport should be set in the Standby Altimeter for reference.
  5. Setup the FMS for arrival as required.
  6. Setup the Speed bugs as required.
  7. Open the FS2Crew Briefing Panel by pressing the BR button on the FS2Crew Main Panel, and play the Approach Brief.  Note:  If you don't want to use the built-in brief, speak: "ARE YOU READY FOR THE APPROACH BRIEF".  Then turn on Hard Mute and make your own brief. Then speak: "ANY QUESTIONS" to complete the briefing.
  8. After completing the Approach Brief, speak "CROSS FILL FMS".  Note: This command performs no function due to simulation limits, but in the real-world this call is made so the approach in the PNF's FMC can be transferred to the pilot flying's FMC.

DESCENT

  1. After the descent has been initiated, speak: "DESCENT CHECKLIST TO THE LINE".
  2. The PM will read the checklist as a read-and-do.
  3. The PM will announce "DESCENT CHECKLIST COMPLETED TO THE LINE" when done.
  4. When passing the TRANSITION LEVEL, speak "XXXX SET CROSS CHECK" where XXXX is the current barometic altimeter setting.
  5. As of Version 3.3, the Altimeters challenge will only play if flying in North America.
